Kiev must accelerate preparations
- Tuesday, 02 June 2009 15:11
Victor Yushchenko, Ukraine’s President, expressed his dissatisfaction with the speed of Kiev’s preparations for the 2012 UEFA European championships and stated that in other cities of his country this process has been stable.
"I have the impression that Kiev is not interested in hosting tournament matches ", he said at a meeting of the EURO 2012 Co-ordination Board on Tuesday. The President is mostly concerned about the modernization of the capital city's Olympic Stadium that has been progressing too slowly. "The attitude of the government and [Kiev’s] municipal authorities should change radically", Yushchenko emphasized and added that the final match of the EURO 2012 championship "must be hosted on that arena".
The President is also anxious because of problems with preparations of roads connecting the cities selected to host the games and municipal transportation in each of them. The preparations in Donetsk, Kharkov and Lviv were described by Yushchenko as "stable". This evaluation results from a series of recent visits paid by the President to these cities.
The President also declared that during the next meetings of the Co-ordination Board he would like to obtain detailed information about progress in the construction of each facility being erected especially for Euro 2012.
According to an announcement of the President’s Chancellery issued during the meeting: "Victor Yushchenko appealed to mayors of cities and governors to make every endeavor to prove that the Ukrainian cities are ready to host Euro 2012".
In May UEFA’s Executive Committee debating in Bucharest decided that so far Kiev has been the only reliable Ukrainian host city, however, it is unknown whether it is capable of maintaining the right to host the final matches. To prove that, UEFA set a deadline for the Ukrainian capital city until 30 November. Similar deadlines were set for the other Ukrainian candidates. UEFA decided that they will have the right to organize EURO 2012 if they catch up with preparations by the end of November.
