Mobility concept after the Final Tournament draw PDF Print

The most important event of 2011 with respect to transport services during the UEFA EURO 2012™ was the Final Tournament draw held on 2 December in Kyiv

lotnsiko_wroclaw_12.11 "We were looking forward to the draw very much. When we finally know the results, we will be able to update and add more details to the national and urban transport services concepts during the Tournament. We have stopped developing potential scenarios based on all variants of the drawing results in Kyiv and we are beginning to work on the basis of real data so that we can prepare our country to service the guests as best we can and mitigate the temporary nuisance to the inhabitants of the Host Cities and people travelling between them", says Szymon Konop, Coordinator of the Transport Service Project.

This is no easy task – the fans of practically each team have different habits concerning the group matches (Italians seldom come to the group matches while the Irish always do); distances between Poland and their countries are different (very close Czech Republic, distant Ireland and Spain); not all countries are in the Schengen zone (Croats and Russians will need visas); some will rather come by car (for Czechs coming from Prague the stadium in Wroclaw is only a 3:30 h drive away); others will choose air transport (with respect to Russians we expect much General Aviation traffic – private planes often piloted by their owners); some will come not from their own countries but from places where they form a large minority (e.g. Croats living in Germany). The list is only a fragment of factors that are crucial to the transport organisation that the representatives of e.g. the Host Cities, PKP S.A., PKP PLK, GDDKiA and the airports will have to take into account.

The specialists working in the project team coordinated by PL.2012 must also assess the chances that all elements of the infrastructure under development are completed before the Championship. Luckily, the very good weather in the fourth quarter this year has improved the situation in many projects that have been delayed. Another important element is the organisation of large fan zones in the Host Cities and outside where people without tickets will follow the events of the Championship together with friends. The most recent but no less important factor that is included in the work on updating the transport services concept is the fact that Poland was selected for the base camps of the national teams of Germany, Russia, Ireland, England, the Netherlands, Italy – the teams that are always followed by fans. The last three selected Krakow and therefore the city will become very important in the transport services scenarios that are being developed.

As we are told by the project coordinator, the update of the concept will be finished by the end of January 2012 and the next step will be development of temporary signage to be used during the Tournament.
