The main and reinforced concrete structures of the National Stadium are scheduled for completion in June 2010 which is being erected where the 10th Anniversary Stadium used to be in Warsaw.

narodowy_budowaAccording to a contract signed by the National Sports Centre and Alpine Bau Deutschland AG - Alpine Bau Gmbh -Alpine Construction Polska sp z o.o. - Hydrobudowa Polska SA -PBG SA, international consortium, the second stage of the construction is to be completed on 30 April 2011.

On Tuesday the contractor presented a schedule providing for finishing works of the underground and overground sections, including the facade, and external works, such as service lines, roads, greenery, fencing and separate pavilions at the main entrance gates leading to the stadium.

"Failure to meet any of key deadlines results in a penalty amounting to PLN 100,000 being charged for each of the first 14 days and PLN 1,000,000 for each subsequent day of default", Janusz Kubicki, Director in charge of the construction of the NSC, said.

"All works are scheduled for completion on 30 April 2011, however, UEFA was notified about the completion date of 30 June, which means that we will have two extra months that will enable us to open a stadium ready for use in 100%", Mirosław Drzewiecki, Minister of Sport said.

He emphasized that Poland is not located in Africa which is why "extra time must be allowed for. Certain things depend on weather conditions and seasons of the year. Wintertime always halts construction works but many works are performed outside the stadium and require involvement of plants. It should not affect the completion of the construction process. We must be responsible and aware of the fact that not every day it is possible to perform the planned works".

Juliusz Sikora, Director of the Polish branch office of Alpine, assured us that "works have been carried out seven days a week, 16 hours per day and if such necessity arises and it does not disturb the peace, we can be on the site even 24 hours per day".

"Work at heights is most important. It requires decent weather conditions. Any other works can be carried out regardless of weather and temperature. The first crane will appear at the stadium in mid-July while concreting is scheduled to start on 15 June", he added.

The main steel structure weighs over 11,000 tons. 193,000 cubic meters of concrete will be used for the stadium's construction. The very roof wedge section weighs 1,200 tons.

Basic installation works will be performed using 14 cranes that are 70 m high, with 60m arms. The steeple will be the highest part of the National Stadium rising 110m above the Vistula River.

"We have the whole project under control", Minister Drzewiecki assured and added that "threats are inevitable but are within our control. It is a difficult, unique facility to be erected. Its roof formula is unique on a global scale when it comes to installation ".

Whether the roof is to be installed or whether the underground parking lot is to be built first remains an open question. However, it will be decided this week.

The Alpine Bau Deutschland AG - Alpine Bau Gmbh - Alpine Construction Polska sp z o.o. - Hydrobudowa Polska SA - PBG SA consortium signed a contract as the contractor of the National Stadium in Warsaw on 4 May 2009. According to the contract the facility will be opened in May 2011, i.e. one year before the commencement of the final tournament of the UEFA's European Football Championship.
