The concrete that is to prepare the ground for the placing of the foundations of the Gdańsk stadium for Euro 2012 Championship was poured on Tuesday on the site. The works are scheduled for completion in January 2011.
On Tuesday approx. 180 cubic meters of the so-called "lean concrete" were poured for the purpose of flattening and leveling the ground for reinforced concrete. SEE: pictures of concrete pouring The concrete was poured using a special pump by truck mixers into formwork prepared in advance. The works performed on Tuesday were completed in the area where the main grandstand and VIP section will be located. The laying of a cornerstone is planned for mid-July. The first stage of the works, i.e. excavations, started in mid-December 2008. The construction of the facility which is going to host three group games and one quarterfinal game of Euro-2012, is going to cost more than PLN 600m. The construction design has 92 volumes and will be completed by Rhode - Kellermann - Wawrowsky. The stadium will be 227 m long, 194 m wide and 45 m high. Its roof will be supported by 82 steel bays each weighing 66 tons. Roof panels will be made of polycarbonate in six shades of amber. Two promenades will surround the stadium of a total area of 16,000 square meters. The playing field will be accessible by four tunnels. There will be 22 staircases and 7 elevators at the stadium. The stadium and its neighboring facilities will be erected on a plot of land of 34 hectares. There will be 7 overground floors and one underground floor. Its cubature will equal eight times the cubature of Gdańsk-based Mariacka Basilica (the largest Gothic brick church in Europe - PPA) or three auditoria and will be erected at the border of Gdańsk and Sopot. The seating capacity of 44,000 includes 1,500 seats in the VIP section. Rainwater will be collected in a tank having the capacity of 2,500 cubic meters and will be used to water the stadium's turf and supply toilets. Stadium parking lots were designed for the capacity of 1,800 passenger cars, 160 coaches or trucks. A parking lot hedgerow will be 1.6 km long - it is planned that 216 trees will be planted, including maples, sycamore, black alder, downy birch, hornbeam, European ash or American sweet-gum. The designers assumed the stadium's structure will resemble an amber but not only. Benches, roofs of box office containers and parking lots for bikes will be rounded to resemble scattered stones. All these elements will be illuminated with amber light. The playing field's lighting will be 2,000 lux, and the distance between the side line and the first row of the stands will range from 6 to 10 meters. Total audience evacuation time is eight minutes.
