The last obstacle for preparations of the Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdańsk to the Euro 2012 has been removed on Friday. Thanks to a contract concluded with Budimex, the airport will acquire new aprons which will allow simultaneous "parking" of 50 planes.
Costs of investment amount to nearly 23 million zlotys. Up to now the airport was able to take 19 airplanes at the same time. After completion of the works, which is to take place 22 months from now on, this number will increase by 2.5 times. This is quite important because of the quarter-final match which will be played in our city, since the investment will make it possible to significantly increase the number of takeoffs and landings and, as a result, will streamline the air traffic.
"Thanks to all investments, we will soon have one of the most modern airports in Poland" – said deputy president of the Pomeranian voivodeship, Leszek Czarnobaj.
In the nearest future, a modern specialised fire engine will be parked in the airport's garage.
The apron is the third large project implemented within the framework of the expansion of the Gdansk airport. Contracts have already been concluded with companies building the new taxi way (Skanska) and the new terminal (Budimex and Doraco).
The last of the contracts concerning the largest construction projects puts an end to speculations about possible delays in the airport preparations for the Euro 2012. The Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdańsk will satisfy all, even the most restrictive, UEFA requirements.
